Job Summary Reporting to the Coordinator for Support Services, the English Learning Specialist will coordinate and provide extensive comprehensive English academic support for students through the development and implementation of specifically designed resources to enhance student academic success.
The incumbent will be responsible for implementing individualized academic support needs fir students at-risk, based on SSU Admissions requirements, and aligned with the Board of Regents policy and procedures to meet learning needs and assist students with developing a roadmap for academic success.
The English Learning Specialist diagnoses and works with students individually and in small groups to provide students with diagnostic, analysis, referrals, feedback or enrichment and/or support programs to meet student needs.
The incumbent will provide ongoing personalized advising, as part of a university-wide intervention to improve undergraduate students' academic success, such as inputting data, and tracking student entry, retention, progressions and completion of programs.
The English Learning Specialist serves as a liaison with faculty and staff to create, implement, and monitor relevant resources available for student enrichment and support to ensure student success.
The incumbent provides workshops on effective learning strategies and skill development for English.
The work includes some nights and weekends during the academic terms.
This is a grant funded position and continued employment is contingent upon the availability of funding.
The incumbent may be directed to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically delineated in this description.
Responsibilities · Coordinate educational English support services for students at risk due to poor academic performance.
· Analyze individual student's learning needs through Admission Requirements (SAT/ACT/Freshman Index).
Based on assessment, recommend specific learning support courses, including tutoring when appropriate.
· Promote student learning by providing skill assessment, and a variety of learning strategies and services to enhance students' learning skill development and outcomes.
· Assist students in adhering to core curriculum requirements and learning support requirements, selecting and scheduling courses, and reviewing academic progress for on-time graduation.
· Work collaboratively with other departments to ensure related goals, objectives, and services to enhance learning support and respond effectively to students' learning needs.
· Develop and maintain appropriate student records.
Maintain privacy of student records in accordance with FERPA.
· Maintain data collection system that aligns with departmental requirements and facilitates effective program evaluation.
· Assist the Director with data analysis to determine effectiveness of service in supporting students' learning goals and outcomes, identify strategies to enhance efforts and strengthen outcomes.
· Actively participate in professional development activities.
In addition to College-sponsored activities, maintain professional development in learning support strategies, technologies and best practices.
Required Qualifications · Master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
(International degrees - must provide a U.
S.
equivalency report of your degree credentials) · Minimum of three years related experience required · Familiarity with college student development and post-secondary learning support strategies, policies and procedures.
· Experience with performance and data assessment · Must demonstrate excellent communication skills, oral and written.
· Commitment to the goals and mission of an access college.
· Desire and ability to assist students and establish rapport with faculty and administration.
· Must have excellent organizational skills.
· Must possess a high level of the following work skills and behaviors: organizational, team work/collaboration, customer service, attention to detail, and commitment to continuous professional growth in skills and knowledge.
